Aden faces pressure from increasing waves of displacement

The Yemeni capital, Aden, is experiencing unprecedented levels of unregulated displacement as large numbers of people migrate from Sanaa and other northern provinces. This influx is placing severe pressure on the city's infrastructure, basic services, and security.

Local authorities report that the rapid population increase has led to unplanned urban expansion, including the construction of informal settlements on protected mountain ranges. The situation is compounded by ongoing Houthi military escalations and attacks on civilian infrastructure, which drive further displacement toward the south.

In response, the Governor of Aden, Abdulrahman Sheikh, met with representatives from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UNHCR to discuss emergency response plans. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation to expand humanitarian, service, and developmental support to help the city manage the growing needs of both displaced populations and host communities.
