Aden and Taiz face severe gas shortage and rising costs
A severe shortage of domestic and vehicle gas is causing widespread economic hardship in Aden and Taiz, Yemen. In Aden, the scarcity of cooking gas cylinders has led to long queues at official stations and a surge in prices on the black market. This has forced many residents to return to using firewood for cooking.
The crisis has also severely impacted the transportation sector. As many drivers previously switched from gasoline to gas to reduce operating costs, the current shortage has reduced the number of active public transport vehicles. Consequently, transportation fares in Aden have risen significantly, with some routes increasing from 500 to as much as 1,000 Yemeni riyals. In Taiz, public transport fares have reportedly jumped by 50%.
Local residents and drivers have expressed frustration over the rising costs and the lack of official price controls. In Taiz, bus owners and drivers held protests demanding the resumption of gas supplies for vehicles, holding government authorities responsible for the shortage.
