Aden protesters demand protection for Hengraj Mataji Temple

Protesters and heritage advocates gathered in the Al-Khasaf area of Crater, Aden, to demand the protection of the Hengraj Mataji Temple archaeological site. The demonstration included local officials, social figures, and heritage experts.

The protest was triggered by a land ownership dispute involving a merchant identified as ‘Humsan,’ who claims ownership of land within the temple’s protected perimeter. While the merchant has asserted his claim through official documents via the ‘Crater Sky’ website, protesters argue that the land is part of the historical site and that any attempt to seize it violates heritage protection laws.

A statement issued by Wadi Aman, director of the Aden Heritage Center, called on the local authorities, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the General Authority for Antiquities, and judicial and security agencies to intervene. The protesters demanded an immediate investigation into the legal status of the land and the cancellation of any actions that threaten the temple’s sanctity, emphasizing that Aden’s historical landmarks are a public legacy that must be preserved for future generations.
