ADHD and migraines linked by impaired sensory filtering
Research indicates a significant link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and migraines. Experts suggest that a “missing stimulus filter” in the brain may be a common factor between the two conditions.
In individuals with ADHD, a deficiency in neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenaline impairs the brain's ability to automatically filter out irrelevant stimuli. This results in sensory inputs like noise, light, or internal thoughts reaching consciousness almost unfiltered. This heightened neurological sensitivity can lead to nervous system overload, potentially triggering or exacerbating migraine attacks.
ADHS Deutschland e. V. continues to highlight various research areas regarding ADHD, including its impact on work, school, and its relationship with other conditions such as autism spectrum disorders and somatic comorbidities.
