ADHD and perimenopause symptom overlap

Distinguishing between ADHD and perimenopause can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms such as brain fog, sleep disturbances, memory issues, and mood fluctuations. While ADHD symptoms typically originate in childhood or young adulthood, perimenopause occurs during the five to ten years leading up to menopause, often affecting individuals in their 30s or 40s.

Fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can impact cognitive function. Experts note that perimenopause may act as a tipping point, making existing ADHD symptoms harder to mask or potentially revealing previously undiagnosed ADHD.
