ADHD and the connection to procrastination

Procrastination is a common experience for individuals living with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), even though it is not formally recognized as a clinical symptom. This behavior is often driven by executive dysfunction rather than a lack of motivation or laziness.

Executive dysfunction affects complex brain functions such as impulse control, problem-solving, and self-motivation. Research indicates that more severe ADHD symptoms correlate with a higher likelihood of procrastination. Other contributing factors include inattention and perfectionism. While procrastination can lead to serious life consequences, getting treatment for ADHD symptoms is noted as the most effective method for managing these challenges.
