ADHD awareness grows amid social media self-diagnosis concerns

Public discussions regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have gained momentum following the personal testimony of footballer José María Giménez, who shared his own diagnosis and that of his son. This has prompted renewed interest in the complexities of diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders in young children.

Experts note that diagnosing a three-year-old requires caution, as children at that age are still developing fundamental impulse control and emotional regulation. A clinical diagnosis must be based on persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that cause significant daily difficulties, rather than typical developmental behaviors.

Simultaneously, psychologists are raising concerns about the influence of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Short-form videos often present simplified lists of symptoms for conditions such as ADHD, autism, or High Sensitivity (PAS), which can lead young people to adopt mental health labels without professional consultation. Experts advise parents to validate their children's feelings while guiding them toward professional medical evaluations rather than relying on internet content.
