ADHD diagnosis challenges identified in women and children

Medical experts are highlighting the challenges of diagnosing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), particularly in children and women. Specialists note that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts learning, organization, and emotional regulation, rather than just being a matter of being restless or distracted.

There is a significant diagnostic gap for women, who often present with inattentive profiles rather than the hyperactive behaviors traditionally used in clinical criteria. This can lead to women being mislabeled as flighty or disorganized, with many receiving diagnoses only in adulthood. Experts suggest that the effort to mask symptoms to meet social norms often leads to exhaustion and burnout.

Additionally, emotional dysregulation—characterized by intense mood swings and low frustration tolerance—is a frequently misunderstood symptom. For many women, these symptoms may become more pronounced during life transitions such as perimenopause, complicating existing coping mechanisms.
