ADHD diagnosis trends and legal rights in Brazil
The rise in ADHD diagnoses among adults, particularly women, is being attributed to scientific advancement and the breaking of gender stereotypes rather than a passing trend. Historically, the disorder was often associated with hyperactive boys, while girls who exhibited inattentive symptoms frequently went unnoticed.
In Brazil, individuals with ADHD have specific legal protections. Under the Brazilian Inclusion Law (Law 13.146/2015) and subsequent legislation, those with proven long-term impairments are entitled to pedagogical adaptations, differentiated school evaluations, and additional time for exams such as the Enem and public civil service competitions. The Ministry of Education also provides guidelines for Individualized Teaching Plans and Case Studies to support these individuals.
