ADHD linked to increased risk of gastrointestinal disorders
A large-scale research study conducted by the University of Warwick has identified a significant link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and gastrointestinal issues. Analyzing data from over 1.9 million participants across various countries, including the United States, Sweden, Germany, and South Korea, researchers found that individuals diagnosed with ADHD face a substantially higher risk of digestive ailments.
Specifically, the study indicates that the risk of constipation is more than doubled for those with ADHD, while the probability of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is nearly four times higher. Other observed issues include increased prevalence of diarrhea and encopresis. Researchers noted that while a direct cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been established, the findings suggest a strong correlation that may impact daily life and is often overlooked when clinical focus remains solely on ADHD symptoms.
