ADHD management: Addressing financial costs and medication needs

Experts are highlighting the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals with ADHD, ranging from financial implications to medication management. The term ‘ADHD tax’ is used informally to describe the extra money, time, and energy spent due to the condition. These costs include direct expenses like diagnosis, therapy, and medication, as well as indirect costs stemming from symptoms that impact daily routines and financial stability.

In terms of clinical management, the formulation of ADHD medication is becoming a critical factor in patient adherence. For individuals with comorbidities such as autism spectrum disorder, sensory sensitivities may make standard pills difficult to tolerate, necessitating alternative forms like liquids or chewables. Additionally, the need for dosing flexibility—such as adjusting strength between workdays and weekends—is a significant driver of treatment adherence, which can be limited by traditional extended-release capsule designs.
