ADHD recognition and diagnosis in children and adults

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Experts emphasize that ADHD is a medical condition rather than a result of laziness, lack of discipline, or a social media trend.

For children, symptoms often manifest as difficulty sitting still, forgetting school supplies, or struggling to follow instructions. It is crucial to distinguish between typical childhood restlessness and ADHD by evaluating the frequency, duration, and intensity of these behaviors across different environments, such as home and school. Misidentifying these symptoms can lead to children being unfairly labeled as disobedient or uneducated.

In adults, the disorder can present as persistent difficulty organizing tasks, managing responsibilities, or maintaining focus during meetings. A formal diagnosis requires professional assessment to ensure symptoms are persistent and significantly impair daily functioning in work, education, or personal relationships.
