ADHD research introduces four-dimensional model to explain symptom contradictions

A new four-dimensional model of ADHD, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, aims to explain the apparent contradictions in how the disorder manifests. While ADHD is traditionally defined by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, the new model suggests that symptoms may exist on two poles of four different axes. Rather than a constant deficit, the disorder may involve instability where a person shifts between extremes, such as moving from an inability to focus to states of intense hyperfocus, or from hyperactivity to a lack of energy to initiate tasks.

Separately, experts note that concentration difficulties in adults can stem from various sources beyond ADHD. Factors such as chronic stress, sleep deprivation, fatigue, and mental health conditions like anxiety or depression can significantly impair attention and executive functions. It is noted that concentration issues alone do not constitute a diagnosis and may be linked to environmental or lifestyle factors.
