ADHD symptoms and the impact of short-form video algorithms

Experts are highlighting the distinction between ADHD and simple indiscipline, noting that hyperactivity is a disorder requiring management rather than a behavioral issue stemming from upbringing. Saša Stepanović, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at Alfa BK University, warns against self-diagnosis, stating that hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention are key symptoms that vary by individual and can significantly disrupt daily routines.

Complementary research from Graz University of Technology explores how digital environments affect those with ADHD. A study involving 302 participants found that individuals with ADHD experience greater difficulty estimating time spent on short-form video platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. These users reported higher levels of emotional discomfort and regret following extended viewing sessions.

Researchers describe this phenomenon as an ‘engagement trap,’ where recommendation algorithms and infinite scrolling remove natural pauses, making it harder for neurodivergent individuals to cease consumption compared to those without the disorder.
