Adhemar Guzmán Ballivián elected ALADI Secretary General

The Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) has selected former Bolivian minister Adhemar Guzmán Ballivián as its new Secretary General for the 2026-2029 term. The decision was reached by consensus during a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Bolivian Foreign Minister Héctor Huanca supported the candidacy, emphasizing that ALADI's strength should be measured by its ability to reduce economic gaps between Latin American nations rather than just the number of agreements signed. Huanca positioned Bolivia as a strategic connector between Atlantic and Pacific economies to facilitate regional trade and physical connectivity.

During the proceedings, Cuban Ambassador Lissett Pérez reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to regional integration through various trade agreements. However, she raised concerns regarding the sustainability of independent integration frameworks in the face of unilateral and coercive economic measures.
