Adhesive technology advances focus on strength and sustainability

Advancements in adhesive technology are focusing on improving industrial efficiency, product durability, and environmental sustainability. Companies like tesa are integrating material expertise with digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence to address complex manufacturing challenges, such as creating components that are easier to repair or disassemble.

In academic research, chemists at Virginia Tech have developed new adhesives designed to solve the dilemma of strong adhesion versus easy removal. One research team utilized liponic acid to create polymers that are significantly stronger than standard commercial tapes but can be chemically split into their original components within hours. A second team developed a 'bottlebrush polymer' that provides four times the strength of heavy industrial tape and can be broken down by mild alkaline water within minutes. These innovations aim to reduce adhesive residue, which often hinders the recycling of materials like cardboard.
