ADID Timiș launches organic waste-to-energy pilot in Timișoara
ADID Timiș, in collaboration with the Timișoara City Hall, Piețe S.A., RETIM, and Genesis Biopartner, has launched a pilot project to convert organic waste from nine markets in Timișoara into green energy and fertilizer.
Starting August 17, 2026, vendors sort vegetable and food waste into dedicated brown containers. This waste is collected by RETIM and transported to the Genesis Biopartner station in Pișchia. Using anaerobic digestion technology, the organic matter is transformed into biogas for electricity and thermal energy, as well as digestate, which serves as an organic fertilizer for agriculture.
The initiative aims to test the mechanism at scale to prepare for the county-wide introduction of brown bins for bio-waste collection. By separating organic waste, the project seeks to reduce pollution and prevent the contamination of other recyclable materials.
