Urda train collision: Technical failures documented before fatal crash

Internal records from Adif, Spain's railway infrastructure manager, reveal a series of simultaneous technical failures occurred shortly before the train collision in Urda, Toledo, which resulted in 69 deaths. The incidents took place on the high-speed Madrid-Sevilla line between the Mora, Orgaz, and Urda stations.

According to internal logs, the failures began around 8:30, approximately 23 minutes before the collision between a Renfe AVE and an Iryo train. The documented issues include a failure in the LZB safety system central in Urda, which is responsible for supervising train speeds and automatic braking. This was accompanied by failures in GSM-R communications used by drivers and control centers, intermittent data transmission losses in track circuits, and electrical power interruptions on both tracks near the Urda station.

While the records confirm these technical malfunctions, they do not assign responsibility or definitive causes. The collision occurred during a period when the LZB system, which provides critical protection, was not functioning normally.
