SPD politicians face investigations in Germany

Multiple prominent members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) are facing criminal investigations in Germany, leading to significant political fallout in Lower Saxony and Berlin.

Stefan Politze, the SPD parliamentary group leader in the Lower Saxony state parliament, has resigned from his position. His resignation follows the lifting of his parliamentary immunity and investigations into suspected complicity in anti-competitive agreements. Politze maintains his innocence but stated his departure was necessary to prevent the controversy from paralyzing the faction's political work.

In Hannover, prosecutors are also investigating Adis Ahmetovic, a member of the Bundestag and chairman of the SPD in Hannover. While specific charges have not been disclosed by authorities for tactical reasons, the investigation is linked to a broader probe regarding a clinic tender in Lehrte. Ahmetovic’s legal counsel has expressed frustration over being denied access to case files.

The investigations also involve Steffen Krach, the SPD parliamentary group leader in Berlin, who is under suspicion of accepting undue advantages. The legal proceedings appear interconnected, centered around procurement processes and potential corruption within the party's regional leadership.
