Adjuto Afonso presides over appointment of new public defenders in Amazonas

On July 27, Adjuto Afonso, president of the Amazonas State Legislative Assembly (Aleam), attended the swearing‑in ceremony for two new fourth‑class public defenders at the Defensoria Pública headquarters in the Aleixo neighbourhood of Manaus. The appointees, Arthur Santana Silva and Geovanna Pinheiro da Silva Moura, will strengthen legal assistance especially in interior municipalities. Afonso highlighted the expansion efforts led by Defensoria General Rafael Barbosa, noting the establishment of service poles outside the capital. The event was attended by senior officials including Rafael Barbosa, subdefenders Helom Nunes and Sarah Lobo, Justice Secretary Jussara Costa representing Governor Roberto Cidade, and representatives of the state Bar Association and local municipalities.

The ceremony underscored Aleam's ongoing support for the Defensoria Pública’s budget and outreach, aiming to improve access to justice for residents throughout Amazonas.
