Adley Rutschman traded from Orioles to Red Sox

Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman, the 2019 first‑overall draft pick, was dealt to the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster trade. The deal sent five players to Baltimore, headlined by right‑handed pitching prospect Anthony Eyanson, along with catcher Carlos Narváez, right‑hander Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar and a player to be named later; the Orioles also included catcher Jake Rogers.

Rutschman learned of the move while walking into a theater with teammates Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser and Ryan Mountcastle to see “Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.” The news prompted an emotional reaction from the players, who hugged him and expressed disappointment at losing a teammate they had grown up with in the minors. The trade follows a series of recent roster moves by Baltimore, including the earlier departure of pitcher Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels.

The transaction marks a major shift for both clubs, giving the Red Sox a promising young catcher and providing the Orioles with multiple prospects to aid their rebuild.
