ADMIE activates new high-voltage interconnections for Ionian Islands

ADMIE has successfully commissioned upgraded high-voltage electrical interconnections between the Greek islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Lefkada. These new lines replace aging infrastructure that had been in operation for decades.

The project involved the installation of two complete cable systems measuring 20.4 km and 14.8 km, respectively. Utilizing 150 kV alternating current technology, the systems also integrate fiber optic telecommunications cables. This upgrade is intended to enhance energy security and provide more reliable electricity to the southern Ionian Islands, including Ithaca, benefiting both permanent residents and the local tourism sector.

Work is also ongoing for a third interconnection between Corfu and the mainland via Igoumenitsa. This 21 km project has completed its cable laying phase, with subsequent protection and installation works expected to continue. The goal for the full completion of the Corfu project is 2027. These developments follow a systematic upgrade of the Ionian electrical loop, which included the Zakynthos-Kyllini connection in 2023.
