ADMIE completes southern Cyclades electricity interconnection

The Greek power grid operator ADMIE has finished construction of the southern Cyclades electricity interconnection, linking the islands of Santorini, Folegandros, Milos and Serifos to the mainland grid via a 150 kV high‑voltage network spanning about 294 km of subsea and underground cables. The project includes four fully digitalized GIS substations and an automatic voltage control (SVC) system on Santorini.

The €385.7 million scheme, classified as of general importance for the national economy, was funded largely by EU recovery funds (€164.5 m) and the European Investment Bank (€157 m plus a €108.44 m loan). It is intended to enhance energy security, end reliance on oil‑fired local generators, cut CO₂ emissions and support the tourism sector. After construction, the system now moves into testing, with gradual commissioning beginning at Santorini during the 2026 tourist season and full electrification expected within the coming months. The project is the final phase of the broader Cyclades interconnection that already connects Paros, Mykonos, Syros, Naxos and upgraded links between Euboea, Andros and Thera.
