Individuals changing their surnames due to marriage, divorce, or other reasons must navigate specific administrative processes to update official identification and records.

In Ireland, a marriage certificate serves as official proof for name changes, allowing individuals to adopt a spouse's surname or a double-barrelled name without a deed poll. Necessary updates include passports, bank accounts, driving licenses, and social services. Updating a passport requires a new application and the submission of the previous document.

In South Africa, the process requires two distinct steps. First, the surname must be officially updated or recorded by Home Affairs on the National Population Register. Once the official record is updated, individuals can then apply for a replacement Smart ID that reflects the new details. Following the ID update, further administrative tasks include updating passports, driver's licenses, and financial or medical records.
