Admiral Efthimov emphasizes complex measures for drone defense
Bulgarian Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Efthimov stated that no single anti-drone system can resolve all challenges posed by unmanned aerial vehicles. Speaking at Chesnegirovo Airport during the multinational experimental exercise BOLD ADRA 26, Efthimov emphasized that effective defense requires a comprehensive approach involving detection, recognition, tracking, situational analysis, and the selection of appropriate countermeasures.
He noted that modern fighter jets and naval vessels can function as anti-drone systems due to their ability to detect and engage targets. To facilitate decision-making, the military aims to build a real-time situational picture using data from aircraft, ships, radar stations, and anti-aircraft missile systems.
Efthimov also called for realism when comparing drone defense in Bulgaria to the conflict in Ukraine or the activities of NATO fighters near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, noting that operational conditions differ significantly. Additionally, Bulgaria has proposed the establishment of a NATO maritime coordination center for civilian shipping.
