Admiral Nakhimov cruiser completes sea trials after 30-year upgrade
The Russian nuclear-powered battle cruiser Admiral Nakhimov has completed its sea trials following a nearly 30-year modernization and repair process. The vessel, a Kirov-class cruiser, is expected to officially enter active service by the end of 2026.
Measuring approximately 251-252 meters in length with a displacement of about 28,000 tons, the ship is one of the largest surface combatants in the world. It is powered by two KN-3 pressurized water nuclear reactors providing 140,000 horsepower, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 32 knots.
The modernized cruiser features a significant upgrade in firepower, including 80 vertical launch cells capable of firing cruise missiles such as the hypersonic Tsirkon. Its air defense capabilities include the equivalent of three S-400 missile battalions, totaling 96 long-range surface-to-air missiles. The ship also includes facilities for up to three heavy transport helicopters.
