Admiral Sir George Zambellas warns Europe is unprepared for major war
Admiral Sir George Zambellas, former First Sea Lord of the British Royal Navy, has warned that Europe is not sufficiently prepared to deter or engage in a large-scale conflict. Speaking to ‘NEA Savvatokyriako’, the former NATO commander stated that European governments are currently paying the price for decades of defense spending cuts following the end of the Cold War.
Zambellas noted that while the American security umbrella provided stability for decades, the shift in political dynamics—specifically citing the actions of Donald Trump—has forced European nations to take greater responsibility for their own defense. He characterized the reduction in military spending as a political choice rather than a military one, where funds were diverted to other purposes.
To address these vulnerabilities, Zambellas emphasized that European states must invest wisely to regain lost ground. He highlighted the need to develop capabilities similar to those provided by the United States, such as infrastructure, connectivity, missiles, ammunition, and communications, which serve as the essential components of NATO unity.
