Admiral Vladimir Barović honored for refusing to attack Croatia
Vanda Babić Galić, an advisor to the Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has called for greater recognition of Admiral Vladimir Barović. Barović, a Montenegrin officer in the Yugoslav Navy, is remembered for refusing orders to participate in the 1991 aggression against Croatia.
Barović, who served as the last commander of the Naval Area based in Split, declined to order the bombardment of Croatian cities or use military force against civilian populations. Following his refusal to comply with these orders, he committed suicide in Pula on September 29, 1991. His actions are cited as a symbol of military honor and moral resistance against the war.
