ADN Madeira seeks clarity on European protection for Madeira Embroidery

The ADN Madeira political party has called on the Regional Government to clarify the status of European protection for Madeira Embroidery. The request comes as the deadline of December 2, 2026, approaches for the transition of nationally protected artisanal and industrial denominations into the new European Union system of Geographical Indications.

Madeira Embroidery was the first non-agricultural Portuguese product protected as a Geographical Indication in 1985. Under the new EU regulations, Member States must notify the European Commission and the EU Intellectual Property Office of which existing national protections they intend to maintain within the new regime by the 2026 deadline.
