Adnan Sami discusses life changes following Indian citizenship

Singer and composer Adnan Sami has discussed how his life changed after obtaining Indian citizenship. Speaking with trade analyst Komal Nahta on ‘Game Changers: The Music Series’, Sami noted that while securing work in India was not difficult during his time as a Pakistani citizen, his sense of belonging shifted significantly after naturalization.

Sami officially became a naturalized Indian citizen on January 1, 2016. His transition began after his Pakistani passport expired in 2015. He applied for legal status in India on humanitarian grounds, and the Ministry of Home Affairs granted citizenship under Section 6(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, a provision that allows for naturalization, including for individuals making notable cultural contributions.

Sami attributed his move to India to a lack of opportunities and support within the Pakistani music industry. He also credited legendary singer Asha Bhosle for providing encouragement during his early career and expressed gratitude to India for providing a platform for his musical talent.
