Adolescent health concerns rise regarding sleep aids and substance abuse
Reports from Spain and Mexico highlight growing health concerns among adolescents regarding sleep and substance use. In Asturias, Spain, a report indicates that 19% of teenagers aged 14 to 18 have used hypnosedatives to aid sleep. Additionally, one in three students experiences daytime drowsiness during school hours. Experts note that many minors fail to meet recommended sleep durations during the week, often attempting to compensate on weekends.
In Saltillo, Mexico, data from the Centro de Integración Juvenil shows that individuals aged 15 to 19 represent the highest number of cases related to alcohol and substance abuse. While total cases decreased between 2024 and 2025, this demographic remains the most affected, particularly among high school and university students. Alcohol continues to be identified by health authorities as a primary substance of initial use among students.
