Adolfo Suárez Illana advocates for political concord in new book
Adolfo Suárez Illana, lawyer and former People's Party (PP) deputy, has released a new book titled ‘La concordia es posible’ (Concord is Possible). In the work, the son of former Spanish Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez González advocates for political consensus as a vital tool for social unity.
Suárez Illana argues that current political trends, including pacts with Bildu or Catalan separatists, have eroded national concord. He criticizes the use of historical divisions for political gain, describing it as irresponsible. Furthermore, he states that the current Democratic Memory Law moves in the opposite direction of concord by reviving the logic of winners and losers.
Reflecting on the Spanish Transition, he emphasizes that progress occurred when political actors moved past the desire to defeat one another in favor of a shared framework. He defines concord not as simple agreement, but as a method of living where citizens choose to share a common home rather than delegitimizing opponents.
