Adonis Georgiadis meets protesters at Volos hospital

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis faced protesters outside Achilleio Hospital in Volos, where labor unions were demonstrating against shortages in medical and nursing staff. Georgiadis responded to the protesters with irony, reportedly telling them, “Finally, a little gang of misery, I missed them,” and briefly joining them in chanting “the only way is resistance and struggle.”

During the encounter, Georgiadis defended the hospital's recent improvements, citing mobile data to claim that the facility's budget rose from 16.83 million euros in 2019 to 31.12 million euros, and the workforce increased from 776 to 822 employees. Despite these figures, union representatives maintained that staffing shortages remain a critical issue and demanded further recruitment.

Following the protest, the Minister toured the newly renovated Emergency Department, which has officially returned to operation. Plans were also announced to establish a radiotherapy department and upgrade the oncology unit with new equipment within the coming year.
