Adopteereendier.be facilitates over 6,300 animal adoptions in early 2026

In the first half of 2026, 6,314 animals were adopted through the Belgian platform adopteereendier.be. The figures, released by Flemish Minister of Animal Welfare Ben Weyts, show that the adoption rate via the platform has increased by 51.5 percent over the last three years.

The adopted animals included 3,674 cats, 1,304 dogs, 628 rodents, 367 meadow animals, and 341 others such as birds, turtles, and snakes. On average, approximately 35 animals found new homes each day. The platform saw 806,100 unique visitors between January and June, representing a 54 percent increase compared to three years ago.

Regional data shows varying adoption levels across Flanders. Antwerp recorded the highest number of dog adoptions with 369, followed by West Flanders (337), Limburg (239), and East Flanders (232). In contrast, Flemish-Brabant reported significantly lower adoption numbers, with 762 total animal adoptions, which is roughly half the amount seen in other provinces. Officials noted that residents of Flemish-Brabant may also adopt from shelters in the Brussels-Capital Region, which could influence these statistics.
