Adrian Gardiner transforms South African farm into 25,000-hectare reserve

South African entrepreneur Adrian Gardiner transformed a 1,200-hectare farm in the Eastern Cape into the Shamwari Private Game Reserve, a massive conservation project spanning 25,000 hectares.

Originally purchased in 1989 as a weekend retreat, the land had suffered from decades of intensive agriculture, overgrazing, and hunting, which had depleted the native wildlife. Gardiner shifted his focus toward ecosystem recovery by acquiring neighboring lands, rehabilitating the soil, controlling invasive species, and reintroducing indigenous animals.

The Shamwari Private Game Reserve was formally established in 1992. By the year 2000, the ecosystem was capable of supporting large predators, leading to the reintroduction of lions. Today, the reserve is home to more than 5,000 animals and 275 bird species, including the African ‘Big Five’: elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards, and lions, as well as cheetahs, hyenas, and various antelope species.
