Adriano Espaillat receives Legacy Award following primary loss

U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat has been honored with the Legacy Award by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). The award was presented during the organization’s annual legislative conference and gala in Washington, D.C., recognizing his three decades of political service and dedication to the Latino community.

Espaillat, the first Dominican-American and the first former undocumented immigrant to serve in Congress, noted that his career has been driven by the hopes and aspirations of those following in his footsteps. He has served in the House of Representatives since 2017 and has held leadership roles, including presiding over the CHCI.

Following his loss in the Democratic primaries for New York’s 13th District to Darializa Ávila Chevalier, Espaillat announced his retirement from the public political stage. Despite this, he emphasized that leadership transcends elected office and expressed his intention to continue working for his community.
