Adriatic Sea and UK Waters Show Climate‑Driven Shifts in Marine Life
Rising sea temperatures are reshaping marine ecosystems across Europe. In the Adriatic Sea along Croatia’s coast, tropical and thermophilic species are becoming increasingly common, while native fish and habitats face pressure from competition and altered breeding patterns. Scientists warn that continued warming could further disrupt biodiversity, tourism, and fisheries that depend on the region’s marine resources.
A separate study of UK waters by the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership finds that warming is altering plankton communities, the foundation of marine food webs. Earlier and longer spring plankton blooms and a northward shift of species are expected, reducing the efficiency of energy transfer to fish and raising concerns for the future productivity of UK fisheries and seafood security. Researchers highlight the need for ongoing monitoring to manage the ecological and economic impacts of these climate‑driven changes.
