Adriatic Wonders project promotes marine biodiversity in San Benedetto del Tronto
The Adriatic Wonders project, promoted by National Geographic Society Explorers, recently held an event in San Benedetto del Tronto to promote awareness and scientific dissemination regarding the biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea.
Hosted at the Lega Navale, the initiative featured marine biologists Martina Capriotti and Arianna Mancuso, who led seminars and guided snorkeling sessions to help participants observe marine life firsthand. The project aims to highlight the importance of the underwater ecosystem, which often remains invisible to the public.
The Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) participated in the event, emphasizing its role in environmental protection. The agency utilizes aerial and naval patrols, remote sensing, and Mobile Environmental Laboratories (LAM) to monitor ecological issues. Additionally, the Coast Guard's first Sub Nucleus works to recover ‘ghost nets’—abandoned fishing gear that poses a lethal threat to marine fauna.
