Adult ADHD: Symptoms, Treatment Options and Recent Study Insights
Attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental condition that can continue from childhood into adulthood, characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Adults with ADHD may struggle with concentrating, organizing tasks, maintaining appointments and regulating emotions, which can affect work performance and personal relationships. Specialist services offer diagnosis and evidence‑based treatments, including medication and behavioral support.
A recent qualitative study of young adults with ADHD across eight countries highlighted the emotional burden of masking symptoms and facing stigma, while online communities provided a sense of belonging but also spread misinformation. The study also found that medication adherence is low: after one year, roughly 40‑48% of adolescents, young adults and adults remained on treatment, with side effects, cost and difficulty maintaining long‑term use cited as primary reasons for discontinuation.
