Adult learning and hobby trends highlighted in new reports
A special event hosted by Asajikan.jp will feature Sayaka Kobayashi, the real-life inspiration for the book and film ‘Biri Gal’, to discuss mindsets for adult learning. Kobayashi, who holds a master’s degree in cognitive science from Columbia University, will share insights on overcoming the fear of failure, setting goals, and creating environments conducive to continuous study, such as her recent pursuit of English language mastery and her upcoming launch of the online service ‘AGEL English’ in November 2025.
Separately, a survey conducted by NEXER Group and the tufting specialty store RUGMATAG involving 500 participants highlights shifting trends in leisure. While 60.6% of respondents reported no change in time spent at home, 32.2% noted an increase, primarily driven by a desire for comfort and self-investment. Among those interested in new hobbies, 27.6% have either started or intend to start one. Popular interests include travel and outdoor activities, reading, learning, and fitness. The survey also noted that approximately 82% of respondents were unfamiliar with ‘tufting’, a craft involving creating rugs and tapestries with specialized tools.
