Advanced scanning and augmented reality technologies enhance conservation and archaeology

Advanced scanning technologies, specifically LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and ground-penetrating radar, are transforming archaeology and conservation. LIDAR uses laser pulses to create precise three-dimensional digital elevation models, making it highly effective for mapping through dense vegetation. In contrast, ground-penetrating radar utilizes radio waves to detect underground structures, making it ideal for identifying buried objects.

In Costa Rica, the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC) has developed NatureAR, an augmented reality application designed to enhance visits to protected wild areas. The app provides visitors with information regarding local biodiversity, such as plants and animals, at specific points along trails. Following successful testing at the Montaña Sagrada Natural Reserve within Juan Castro Blanco National Park, a second version of the application is scheduled for release at Arenal Volcano National Park on November 6.
