Advancements in gene editing and aging population challenges
Developments in genetic engineering, specifically in vivo gene editing, are presenting new opportunities and risks within the healthcare sector. Unlike current ex vivo methods that require removing cells for laboratory modification, in vivo techniques aim to edit DNA directly within the patient's body. This approach could allow for the treatment of organs that cannot be easily removed, such as the brain, heart, lungs, or eyes. For investors, the primary considerations include proving long-term safety, obtaining regulatory approval, and demonstrating value to health insurance providers.
Simultaneously, demographic shifts are creating pressure on healthcare systems. In the Czech Republic, the population is aging rapidly, with the number of people over 80 expected to double by 2050. Experts note that the demographic dividend, where a large working population supports seniors, has ended. Addressing these challenges will likely require a combination of increased internal efficiency and the controlled involvement of private capital to supplement public care networks.
