Advancements in knee osteoarthritis treatment and mobility tracking
Developments in the management and treatment of knee osteoarthritis are advancing through both biomaterial innovation and wearable monitoring technology.
Regentis Biomaterials is developing GelrinC, an off-the-shelf hydrogel implant designed to facilitate natural cartilage regeneration. Unlike traditional treatments that focus on symptom management, GelrinC aims to create a repair environment for damaged tissue. The product has received approval in Europe, and an FDA-authorized pivotal trial is currently underway to seek approval in the United States.
In parallel, researchers at the Yale School of Medicine have demonstrated that wearable foot-mounted sensors can accurately track mobility in patients with knee osteoarthritis. A study published in JMIR Formative Research indicates that these sensors can match the precision of gold-standard laboratory motion-capture cameras. This technology allows clinicians to observe how patients move during daily activities, providing a more comprehensive view of disease progression than traditional clinical exams or X-rays.
