Advancements in wearable sensor technology and material design

Researchers are advancing the development of wearable sensor technology through new design methods and material discovery techniques.

In Japan, a team led by Hiroki Shigemune at the Shibaura Institute of Technology has developed a parametric design tool for self-folding paper sensors. Inspired by the spiral growth of climbing vines, these devices can be printed as 2D patterns and automatically fold into helical structures that wrap around fingers, wrists, or arms. Integrated with copper tape electrodes, these low-cost, sustainable paper sensors offer a lightweight alternative to plastic or fabric wearables for measuring biosignals and monitoring physical activity.

Simultaneously, researchers at Iowa State University, led by Wenjie Xia, are utilizing artificial intelligence and computational modeling to accelerate the discovery of stretchable conductors. The team is focusing on organic mixed ionic-electronic conducting polymers, which are essential for bioelectronics because they can transport both electronic charge and ions. By using AI to predict how molecular arrangements and processing methods impact performance, the researchers aim to bypass the slow cycle of traditional laboratory synthesis and testing.
