Advisum proposes 900 MW battery and AI data center in Bavaria

The firm Advisum has proposed a new energy and technology project in Niederaichbach, Bavaria, near the site of the former Isar II nuclear power plant. The plan includes a 900 MW battery storage facility and a 100 MW artificial intelligence data center.

The project aims to utilize the existing electrical node from the Isar II plant, which ceased operations on April 15, 2023, when Germany decommissioned its final three nuclear reactors. While the Bavarian government supports the initiative, the project is currently in the proposal stage and has not yet been connected to the grid. Specific details regarding the total energy capacity in megawatt-hours (MWh) have not been disclosed.

The development addresses the growing need for energy storage in Bavaria, which added 4,675 MW of net photovoltaic power in 2025. Increased solar generation often coincides with low demand or grid capacity limitations, particularly during summer midday periods, which can necessitate the reduction of solar output. Battery storage would allow this excess energy to be captured and redistributed during periods of higher demand.
