Tumbler Ridge shooting: Groups demand firearm transparency

Five gun control advocacy groups, led by PolySeSouvient, have issued a letter to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme demanding transparency regarding the firearms used in the February 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The shooting, which resulted in nine deaths, involved an assailant who later died by suicide.

The groups are requesting the disclosure of specific details, including the make, model, classification, and legal status of the firearms involved, as well as information on how they were acquired and whether they had been previously seized or reported stolen. They argue that providing this information is essential to identifying failures in gun control laws and enforcement.

The RCMP has declined to release specific details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. The advocacy groups maintain that “operational secrecy and public accountability can coexist” and that transparency is necessary to maintain public trust and inform potential policy changes.
