Adyen updates Authenticate solution to optimize payment authentication

Adyen has updated its Authenticate solution, a component of the Adyen Uplift package, to optimize payment authentication through machine learning. The update aims to reduce abandoned shopping carts and increase completed transaction rates by replacing static 3D Secure (3DS) rules with real-time, data-driven decisions.

Unlike traditional 3DS providers, Adyen operates as both an authentication service provider and an acquirer. This dual role allows its machine learning models, trained on trillions of interactions, to learn from final authorization outcomes rather than just the authentication process itself. For each transaction, the system makes three key decisions: whether authentication is required, which method will be most effective, and which data should be sent to the card issuer to maximize the probability of acceptance.

The system directs transactions in real-time to the most effective technology, such as 3DS, Google Secure Payment Authentication, Mastercard Payment Passkeys, or Visa Payment Passkeys. Renan Renner, Group Product Manager for Adyen Uplift, stated that the goal is to move away from choosing a single protocol toward applying the right mechanism for each specific transaction context.
