AECO receives funding to reduce Arctic expedition cruise emissions

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) has received NOK 400,000 from the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund to advance its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from expedition cruise operations. This new grant, combined with previous funding, brings the Fund’s total investment in AECO’s Climate Change Project to NOK 1 million.

Running through February 2028, the project aims to strengthen emissions reporting among AECO members and improve the understanding of greenhouse gas outputs within the sector. Key objectives include assessing the readiness of Arctic ports and infrastructure for the maritime energy transition, specifically regarding alternative fuels and shore power solutions.

Following a Climate Commitment adopted in 2024, members agreed in 2025 to work toward mandatory fuel reporting. The project will also develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and practical guidance to support informed decision-making and responsible Arctic tourism.
