Aedes albopictus mosquito detection and control efforts in Europe

Health authorities in Europe are addressing the spread of the Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito. In Portugal, the detection of this species in the Covilhã municipality has prompted the Guarda Local Health Unit to issue public health warnings. Officials are urging residents to eliminate stagnant water in containers such as flowerpots, buckets, and tires to prevent breeding, as these mosquitoes can transmit viral diseases including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever.

In Spain, Barcelona is conducting a large-scale urban experiment to reduce the mosquito population. The Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) is releasing approximately 1.5 million male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria. This technique uses reproductive incompatibility; when these males mate with local females, the eggs fail to hatch, gradually reducing the population. The project utilizes artificial intelligence to ensure only males are released, aiming to complement traditional control methods like insecticide use.
