Greece and Turkey tensions rise over Aegean maritime claims
Tensions between Greece and Turkey have escalated following Turkey's August 15 declaration of two marine protected areas in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. The new zones include waters near the Greek islands of Limnos, Samothraki, Rhodes, and Kastellorizo.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has labeled the declaration unlawful, asserting that the areas fall within Greek sovereign territory under international law. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece is prepared to defend its sovereignty at any time.
Further friction is expected regarding the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection cable (GSI). Turkey has raised claims regarding the demilitarization of islands and seeks influence over the cable's route. In response, Greek officials have warned that seabed surveys for the project may be conducted with the protection of frigates and F-16 Viper fighter jets.
